Gas and Pizza Money!
August 16, 2006

Keeping it simple, here are two Sierra Foothill gems that recently impressed me for their value and overall enjoyment factor!   When is the last time I touted wines from the "hood" (as in neighborhood)?

2004 Mount Aukum Petite Sirah - Fair Play, El Dorado County
- If it's all about bigger is better!  If size matters?  This is the Black Hummer of red wines!   Think of plump juicy wild blackberries!  Add a dose of minerality from decomposed granite.  A hint of "Good & Plenty" licorice candy.
Smooth riding but with full throttle, muscular tannins.  I don't care if you only drink Cabs (you'll swoon over this one)!  Bring on the brontosaurus rack of ribs!  Drink now for full guts, glory and because there's a lot of wine in this bottle that needs to get out!   $25.95 -  NOW!  Save the discount for gas money!  ONLY $21.50   ORDER AT LEAST SIX BOTTLES FOR ADDITIONAL 10% DISCOUNT > $19.35

2004 Naggiar Sangiovese, Grass Valley, Placer County
- Most producers have given up on this varietal in California.  This 4 acre site may have a special calling!  Harvested late in August, and blended with 8% Petite Sirah, this Sangiovese startled me with it's ample expression of spicy red fruits!  A sense of dusty orange earthiness adds charm with understated rusticity.  Aged for 15 months with 25% new Hungarian oak, the wine has it's own identity, but more closely resembles a Chianti Classico than a Brunello.  Designed for casual fare, I can't wait to try with wood fired oven pizzas, red sauced pastas and basted grilled meats!  450 cases.  $18.95  - NOW!  Save the discount for pizza money!  ONLY $16.95   - ORDER AT LEAST SIX BOTTLES FOR ADDITIONAL 10% DISCOUNT > $15.26

Both wines will be among those available to sample at the tasting bar this Saturday, August 19th. - Noon to 4 pm.
