03 Leuuwin Chardonnay - Artist Series, Margaret River, Western Australia - $79.95

Rich, ripe and seamless, not quite as dense as some vintages, but it has real elegance. It plays its citrusy pineapple, guava, pear and spice flavors over a polished frame, letting them linger effortlessly. Could gain greater depth with age. Drink now through 2015. 400 cases made.   94 points - Wine Spectator, November 15, 2006  (Previously 01 - 98 points, and 02 - 96 points......can't believe this is the "worst" Chardonnay of the last 3 vintages!  It is amazing!)

2005 Mt. Difficulty Pinot Noir, Bannockburn, Central Otago, New Zealand - $34.95

Crushed stone and mineral nuances weave through a vibrant array of black cherry, spice and wild strawberry flavors. The streamlined structure and cedary oak marshal fruit and mineral through the finish. Drink now through 2011. 336 cases imported.  91 points - Wine Spectator, April 30, 2007

04 Goldeneye (Duckhorn) Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley, Mendocino - $52.95

Exhibits dusty berry, cola and wild raspberry flavors in a complex, well-focused style.  Ripe and tannic, this shows nice fruit on the finish, where the tannins provide traction.  Drink now through 2011.  91 points, Wine Spectator, June 15, 2007

05 Beaux Freres Pinot Noir - Ribbon Ridge, The Vineyard, Willamette Valley, Oregon - $74.95

Firm in texture at first, but then blossoms into a panorama of flavors, fanning out its raspberry cream flavors and hinting at floral, mineral, green tea and Asian spice notes as the finish picks up steam. Not a big wine, but has many layers to explore. Best from 2009 through 2015.  93 points - Wine Spectator, May 31st., 2007

2004 Clarendon Hills - Old Vine Grenache, Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale, AU - $79.95

As usual for this cuvee, the 2004 Grenache Blewitt Springs possesses an extraordinary, exotic, flamboyant personality that causes Roman Bratasiuk to say it's his "Dolly Parton-styled wine." Terrific notes of blackberries, raspberries, and rich kirsch liqueur are accompanied by an opulent, flamboyant wine with tremendous viscosity and richness as well as a lusty, heady finish. In short, it's a mouthfilling, full-bodied red to drink during its first 5-7 years of life.
93 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, Issue 167, October 2006

Firm tannins provide grip for the dense blackberry and plum flavors, which turn distinctly peppery and aromatic on the long, pointed finish. Needs time to flesh out, but it has the goods. Best from 2008 through 2016. 500 cases imported. 93 points - Wine Spectator, October 15, 2006

05 Saxum Broken Stones, Paso Robles - $74.95 NET

The 2005 Broken Stones (a blend of 74% Syrah, 24% Grenache, and 2% Mourvedre aged in 500 liter French oak pungeons) reveals great purity of fruit along with a beautiful bouquet of flowers, and blue, red, and black fruits, a structured, tannic mouthfeel, full-bodied density, and good freshness as well as depth. It should drink well for 7-8 years.  92-95 points -  Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate #166 August 2006

04 Big Basin Syrah - Madala, Santa Cruz Mountains - $44.95

The outstanding, opaque ruby/purple-hued 2004 Syrah Mandala (100 cases) reveals notes of graphite, flowers, and black currants. Rich and medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannin as well as toasty oak in the background, it should drink well for a decade.  90-92 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate #166 August 2006  - Potential to be the "next" PAX!

04 Saxum Bone Rock Syrah, James Berry Vineyard, Paso Robles - $89.95  NET

It was difficult to resist swallowing the 2004 Bone Rock James Berry Vineyard, a blend of 85% Syrah and the rest Mourvedre and Grenache. While not a blockbuster like the 2003, the 2004, probably because of the cooler year, possesses more minerality, definition, and delineation. Enormously well-endowed, with creme de cassis, raspberry, smoke, licorice, incense, and crushed rock-like characteristics, it is a fabulously concentrated, multilayered, intense effort that should handsomely repay cellaring for more than a decade. I highly recommend that wine enthusiasts who love Rhone Ranger wines pay a visit to the James Berry Vineyard, one of the true grand cru sites in the region.
95-98 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate #159 June 2005

Made from a blend of 85% Syrah, 12% Grenache, and 3% Mourvedre, there are 500 cases of the 2004 Bone Rock James Berry Vineyard. It possesses a saturated ruby/purple color along with tight, restrained aromatics of blackberries, blueberries, and flowers, good acidity, fleshy, full-bodied flavors, and fine elegance, delicacy, and finesse ... rare for a wine of this size and intensity. It will drink well for 10-12 years.  93 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate #166 August 2006

04 Emrich-Schonleber Riesling Spatlese Monzinger Halenberg, Nahe, Germany - $52.95

Scintillating aromas and flavors of berries, citrus, vanilla and stone highlight this elegant, intense Riesling. An amazing range of flavors packed into a light-weight frame, with a vibrant structure that resonates through the finish. Terrific, complex aftertaste. Drink now through 2025. 365 cases made.  95 points - Wine Spectator, March 31st., 2006

05 Hirtzberger Gruner Veltliner Rotes Tor Smaragd, Wachau, Austria - $48.95

Harvested November 8-10 from the steepest terraces of the Rotes Tor (adjacent to Singerriedel), Hirtzberger's 2005 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Rotes Tor smells of sweet pea, citrus, and rhubarb. It comes onto the palate with creamy texture yet loads of juicy fruit and positively shimmering wet stone, salty mineral expression. Like its Federspeiel counterpart, this exhibits great clarity of fruit, even though one can detect accents of honey and brown spice attributable to botrytis. A brothy, rich meld of stone, spice, and fruit pours itself into a long, evocative finish that outdistances all but a handful of other Gruner Veltliner from this vintage. I would be unafraid to stash some of this in my cellar for a decade or more indeed I would regret not doing so, and while I was at it I would track some bottles of the Federspiel as well. 94 points - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate #166 August 2006
