Smell the Roses!
October 03, 2007

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the compelling "garrigue" aromas, or the scents from the wild scrub land often found in the wines of southern France > click on www.thewineconsultant.com/newsletter/324 for "Waiter!  There is Garrigue in My Glass!"

Now comes a delightful red wine "Gavigliano" from the producer Luciano Landi  in the Marche region (Adriatic) of Italy possessing the most fragrant aromas of crushed roses.  Honestly, pick your colors, but this wine smells like a huge bouquet of big, spicy full bloom roses......HMMMM?? I have visions of Rose Bowl floats on New Year's Day***.  Of course, this is wine....not rose water, so expect to find a very charming soft black berry component from the varietal grape  Lacrima di Morro integrated with the "rose garden" nose.   Deeply colored in a red cloak, the 2005 Gavigliano delivers a delicious mouthful of subtle rose petals infused with bright berry fruits.  No thorns here, as the texture is as well mannered as a first date, and the wine shows some overall refinement.

Also available is a passito style (the ripe grapes are sun dried on mats to dehydrate and shrivel; resulting in a higher concentration of sugar) dessert wine from Luciano Landi  also using 100% Lacrima di Morro d' Alba grapes.  More penetrating, concentrated, and reduced, but with the same integration of roses and berry on the nose and palate as the "Gavigliano", this wine's residual sugar is restrained by exacting acidity....and is never cloying.  Perfect with chocolate, berries, biscotti, Italian trifle, or a pungent blue vein cheese.   A real conversation piece!
