YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!
Kindred Wines-

February 27th 2008
Dear Eric,

I just want to go on the record and let you know about Kindred Wines, so in a few years when everyone is raving regarding this "new discovery" producer, you might remember you heard it from me first.  Normally, I would not include any of these wines in an e-mail as there is scarcely enough production, let alone availability.  But owner-partner Tim Halloran has assured me a greater allocation if I need it.

I had not heard of Kindred Wines, until I became embroiled in a debate with Alder Yarrow on his highly regarded blog Vinography.  Mr. Yarrow was very excited about the premiere release of KW's 2005 Amber Ridge Pinot Noir, and based on his description of this wine,  I took exception to his suggested pairing of something "delicate and simple" like "a simple roast duck confit".  I recommend you read his impressions and background notes of Kindred Wines, and hope you also enjoy our exchange.

Ironically, Tim Halloran, who has a customer purchase history with me, enjoyed my comments on the blog and contacted me to sample the 05 KW Pinot Noir.  However, the wine had already sold out before he had an opportunity to meet with me a few days later.  Last week we finally convened to sample Kindred Wines' three new releases.  The wines were stunning and made an immediate impression on me.  However, as I continued to sample the open bottles over the next three days, it was a revelation as I observed each wine's uncanny ability to duel one another by growing in scope and gaining greater complexity.

Ever so briefly......
2006 Pinot Noir - Amber Ridge Vineyard, Russian River Valley, Sonoma
The shiest and most restrained of the three wines. But within another day, it has outgrown pubescence and begins to radiate a seductive charm.  Then between days two and three, it gains very spicy perfume notes, and more red cherry & raspberry fruit to hang on some sexy new curves!  For those who know - Clones 115, 667, & 777. No whole stem inclusion.  50% new Remond French oak for 14 months.  A hefty 96 cases. - $49.95
2005 Syrah - Thompson Vineyard, Los Alamos Valley, Santa Barbara
Dark and brooding Syrah from the Estella clone block of this famous vineyard (Bedford-Thompson). Violets, rich blackberries, peppery spice, and minerals and loam are obvious from the get go. In the duration, the palate gains a more supple texture, never losing any of its muster or lengthy finish. 25% new Remond French oak for 16 months.
OH NO! A mere 45 cases. - $44.95
2005 Ascendant - Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
For the Ascendant, KW is legally bound not to divulge its sourcing from two of the most legendary Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards (Hint: $$$, Paul Hobbs, Schrader, the old BV #4).  The masterful blend is completed with a balancing component of Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon from Lail Vineyard.  Polished and elegant when first opened, the beautiful cassis-black cherry fruit becomes increasingly layered and complex with decantinging.  Amazingly, over a 72 hour span, the Ascendant seem to "bulk up" in the weight room, but still maintains its sense of style and refinement.  100% new French oak (primarily Sirugue and Vicard) for 20 months.  70 cases - $79.95
