This is
IT! I always hear, "I love Lewis Cabs,
but I'll just wait for the
RESERVE." I can honestly
say that Lewis Cellars has become iconic for Napa
Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. If you have not experienced
the gustory thrill of drinking this
revvvvved up wine, .....will
then, where have you been? Lewis Cellar's stunning
track record has established its Reserve
Cabernet as a man-datory purchase for
most California collectors. Now comes the limited
release of the 2005 Lewis Reserve Cabernet
Sauvignon - Napa Valley, from the
winery's trove of impeccable vineyard sources, including
the rugged Pritchard Hill overlooking Lake
Hennessey (this "high rent neigborhood" is home
to David Arthur, Bryant Family, Chappellet...).
Last July when Randy and Debbie
Lewis hosted their 15th anniversary party to
commemorate the first vintage of Lewis Cellars in 1992,
we were jet lagged from Europe, but more than pleased to
attend. The event was held in the garden of their
beautiful home situated along a ridgeline across from
Pritchard Hill. The boys from Swan Oyster Depot in San
Francisco were shucking up a storm, and Richard
Reddington, chef and owner of Redd's in Yountville (one star
Michelin). was catering with an assortment of the most
delectible small plates.....the fresh peach with foie gras on
toasted brioche was a favorite.....okay, the pork belly
too! But, of course, the star of the show was the wine,
especially the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. And we
had the rare opportunity to indulge in great vintage after
great vintage from magnums to imperials: 1994, 1996, 1997,
1999, 2001, 2002, 2004. The 2005 will certainly join
this grand fraternity!
The "2005 Reserve
Cabernet Sauvignon is a broad-shouldered blend of 93% Cabernet
and 7% Cabernet Franc, crafted from Pritchard Hill, Calistoga,
Rutherford
and Oak Knoll hillside vineyards. The nose is saturated with
blackberry and sweet oak spice, tinged with toffee and
chocolate. On entry the wine is brooding, tightly packed with
fleshy fruit and sinewy texture that gathers richness and
length on the palate with satisfying, fine-grained
tannins."
