| Dear Wine Friend,
Circle the wagons and protect what you can
get your hands on.....Pinot Noir from California has
truly arrived. It may have been popularized by the movie
Sideways, but there is no questioning the quality level is
at an all time high. But better yet, YOU
....the consumer and collector have also evolved to value
and appreciate the rewards when this
sensitive and tempermental varietal is produced
successfully. No longer do you only need a jolting
bombardment to the senses to believe you recognize class and
style. Now you have graduated to trust and rely
on your olfactory senses to detect what is so easy
to overlook; the more delicate, intricately
nuanced.....the sublime. You have graduated
to the best of the wine world, and now you can have it
both ways, and all of the shading in between!
The problem is,..... not enough of the good
stuff! The best.... is micro-batch; grown,
nurtured and handcrafted with the care of an expert
brain surgeon. The trick? NOT to miss out,
but source and purchase "enough"....or you might get
caught up with the dreaded Pinot Noir Envy!!
The Wine "Doc" Consultant is here to aid
you!
May I suggest two new triumphant, but very
limited Pinot Noirs from Brian Loring, a revered
wine-maker, who's eponymous label is synonymous with
the very finest of those wines produced in Santa
Barbara's Santa Rita Hills appellation.
Truly a modern day "hot bed", this cool growing region is
home to the heralded Sea Smoke,
and already "Grand Cru" vineyards such as
Fiddlestix, Clos Pepe, Cargasacchi, Fe Ciega, among
others..... check out the Santa Rita Hills Winegrowers
Alliance at www.staritahills.com/alliance.html .
Greg Walter, a long ago ex-editor of the
Wine Spectator, just published his 50th Issue of
the PinotReport. If you are
unfamiliar with this publication, it is widely considered by
the trade as the reference point resource for west
coast Pinot Noir. The Loring
Wine Company's 2006 Pinot Noirs from the Clos Pepe and
Cargasacchi vineyards are reviewed below by the
PinotReport and offered in todays
e-mail.
