New VALUE DISCOVERIES

AFFORDABLE HIGH QUALITY FROM CALIFORNIA!

Dear Wine Friend,

Finally, TWO NEW producers who really want to be your friends.

Translation!  Wines with tantalizing quality, offered at affordable, value conscious pricing!

Introducing -

2007 LULI CHARDONNAY - Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey

First, from the Pisoni family, who helped pioneer world class wine production in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey, comes the premiere release of the 2007 Luli Chardonnay.  Working in partnership with Master Sommelier Sara Floyd, the Pisoni's have ventured away from the ranch as this Chardonnay is primarily composed from fruit sourced at a neighboring vineyard, but also includes 15% Mendocino Chardonnay.  The Luli was fermented in a combination of 35% neutral (used) oak barrels, and 65% stainless steel vat.  This youthful wine has not been modified by a secondary malolactic fermentation, to create a "buttery" style Chardonnay.  Oak and butter are not part of the equation here.  But please, do not expect a lean, tart or austere wine either.  Instead Luli has a rich, creamy mouthfeel and co-exists with a bright, vibrant natural acidity to accentuate freshly cut apple, pear and tropical citrus fruits...and I swear there is just a hint of banana cream pie lurking.  This wine is certain to please with the warmer weather looming on the horizon.  Try with grilled Mahi Mahi and a papaya salsa.  Drinks like a very good $30 bottle.

And furthermore, introducing -

2006 BROADSIDE CABERNET SAUVIGNON  -
Margarita Vineyard, Paso Robles

This is the first release of the Broadside 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon from Margarita Vineyard.  The Margarita Vineyard was planted in 1999, and is the southern most vineyard in the Paso Robles Appellation.  Located just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean, at an elevation of more than 1000 feet, the hillside plantings are ideally situated to take advantage of the warm days and cool nights.  All viticulture practices embrace sustainable farming and controlled yields.  Calcareous soils embedded with fossilized sea shells provide a thread of mineral complexity rarely seen in wines at this price.

This fruit forward 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced exclusively from the Margarita Vineyard.  The wine is barrel aged for 15 months in a combination of used French (65%) and American (25%) oak, while only interspersed with 10% new French oak.
Produced by rising star winemaker Chris Brockway of Broc Cellars, former assistant to Jeffrey Cohen at JC Cellars, this Cabernet Sauvignon displays a central core of intense and perfectly ripened black cherry aromas and palate impressions.  As forementioned, Margarita's telltale nuance of dark loamy minerality adds intrigue and complexity.  Never flashy, but harmonious and balanced, the round and soft entry makes this wine very enjoyable to drink now, but it should hold easily for another 3-5 years.  By modern day standards,  Broadside's moderate alcohol level of 13.9% is also worth noting.

Sincerely, I think it is fair to say, the 2006 Broadside could just be the BEST CAB VALUE OF THE YEAR!   Only 1,000 cases produced.
