Dear Wine Friend,

Think gas prices are high!!?  What about the escalating prices for Grand Cru Bordeaux from the 2005 vintage??  YIKES!!  I just checked with search tools on the Internet to find prices for the 1st. Growth Chateau Latour, Lafite, Margaux, Mouton and Haut-Brion are fetching an average of $1500 to $2000 for a 750 ml. bottle!!  Across the Gironde River on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, a wine of similar status, the 2005 Cheval Blanc from St. Emilion is going equally as high!  This is not a joke....this pricing is for real!

Just 300 meters from the Cheval Blanc estate is a small producer by the name of Chateau Haut-Segottes.  I don't know why this estate remains such a value because the wine is damn good!  Maybe Haut-Segottes continues to fly under the radar, because it never gets rated?  Serious wine?  YES, it is!  Deep cedar and graphite aromas mingle with wild red and black plum-cassis fruit on the nose.  Broad and expansive across the palate with a full throttle finish!  I had the wine open and decanted for two full days to finally tame down its well endowed, big boned, tannic structure. The 2005 vintage is now considered the latest defining benchmark classic, and like most of the decadent wines from this vintage, Haut-Segottes is a wine destined for the cellar to maximize future enjoyment.

Chateau Haut Segottes has 9 hectares (about 21 acres) planted to vineyards, all within the St. Emilion Grand Cru appellation.  Chateau Haut-Segottes is owned and operated by Danielle Andre. Mme. Andre is also "vigneronne" and "winemaker extraordinaire". Mme. Andre's great-grandfather purchased the estate around 1860 and earned gold medals for his wine as early as 1912 at the Concours Agricole in Paris. In 1959, the estate began to bottle its wine in earnest. In 1972 Mme. Andre took the reins of production.  The vineyards are planted 60% to Merlot, 35% to Cabernet Franc, and 5% to Cabernet Sauvignon with yields controlled to about 45 hectoliters per hectare (2.5 tons per acre).  Cabernet Franc thrives in St. Emilion where it adapts well to the cooler moist clay soils of the region. Tradition reigns supreme at Haut-Segottes! After fermentation, the wine is racked into barrel (20% new) for 18 months of aging.  Unfiltered and unfined, even though more Merlot is grown, the finished wine usually shows a majority of Cabernet Franc than Merlot in the final blend.  No surprise as Cheval Blanc usually consists of 65% Cabernet Franc to 35% Merlot. Annual production is about 3,000 cases.

The price?  What?  A couple of hundred dollars a bottle?  NO!  How about $75?  NO!!
Let's go at $44.95 a bottle.....and $41.95 if you purchase 3 bottles.  Six bottles I will discount it to $39.56 a bottle.   A case?  Even with the Euro exchange rate let's go down to $37.50 a bottle for a case purchase.   This is the REAL DEAL!  We're buying a case.  YOU WILL HAVE NO REGRETS!!

If you will be visiting Napa Valley anytime soon, let me remind about the resurgence of downtown Napa....Yes, the city of Napa is undergoing a monumental change and is now the new hot spot to visit.  Copia led the way, but the new Oxbow Public Market is a gastronome's Disneyland....with plenty of "E tickets" to boggle the mind.  Did you know a new 350 room Ritz Carlton is being built on a riverfront site between Copia and Silverado Trail?
