Finding quality Brunello from
a great vintage such as 2001, let alone ANY vintage,
is going to become increasingly more difficult and
expensive in the near future.
You may be unaware of
the hub bub and controversary
regarding the wine scandal in Montalcino?
Basically, it began in early spring, and revolves around a
local judge who was investigating allegations of illegal
vineyard plantings, and that some of the producers in
Montalcino were not complying with the strict regulation that
only 100 percent Sangiovese be used to make their
Brunello. What basically started as a local political
witch hunt, has now evolved to the U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco
and Trade Bureau (TTB) restricting all attempts to import
Brunello beginning June 23rd. Yes, all Brunello di
Montalacino will be banned from the US market unless the
Brunello importers can provide proof by laboratory
chemical analysis that the wine is made from 100% pure
Sangiovese grape, or provide certification of authenticity by
the Italian government.
NOW! If you say,
who cares!!?? I like a "SuperTuscans" that combine
Sangiovese with Bordeaux varietals. Then I have a great
new discovery for you!!
San
Polo is a beautiful estate located in the southern
eastern part of Montalcino, overlooking the Sant'Antimo valley
and Mount Armiata. It consists of 52 acres, of which 40 are
planted to vines, and is the new joint venture between
Marilisa Allegrini and Leonardo LoCascio (owner of
the prestigious and highly respected import company
Winebow).
The vineyards at San Polo were planted between 1990 and
2000 and the first wines were produced in 1997. All vineyards
have been planted at a high density with Sangiovese and Merlot
grapes. In an effort to employ environmentally sound and
sustainable agriculture, natural compost and nitrogen-rich
plants have replaced the chemical treatments in the
vineyards.
One of Italy's leading
winemakers, Carlo Ferrini has been hired to oversee the
vineyard and the cellar.
The 2004
San Polo Mezzopane (meaning half a loaf of bread) is a
blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Sangiovese. The 20 days maceration
with the skins, followed by fermentation in temperature
controlled stainless steel containers and frequent pumpovers,
allow for extra richness and a greater color extraction. The
18 months aging in small Allier barriques provides great
finesse and complexity. Deep ruby red in color with garnet
hues, Mezzopane offers juicy aromas
or ripe currants and cherries. Fine grained tannins and a
balanced acidty frame the long and fruit finish. Mezzopane is the perfect accompaniment to
wild game, roast beef, grilled meats and medium aged Pecorino
cheeses.
"Ripe plum and vanilla aromas
follow through to a full-bodied palate, with soft tannins and
a long, fruity finish. Lots going on here. Merlot and
Sangiovese.
- 91 points" - Wine Spectator
