Dear Wine
Friends,
Over the Slow Food Nation -
Labor Day weekend in San Francisco, while feasting at
Quince with friends, we went bonkers drinking a
beautifully aged SuperTuscan, the 1998 Masseto
from Ornellaia. The next evening Renee
and I followed up with a bottle of THE legendary
1998 Ornellaia at Sociale, a romantic
little trattoria buried down an
alleyway in the middle of a residential
neighborhood in Presidio Heights (see
website addresses below).
Each dining experience was truly exceptional in its
own right, but the profoundness of the wines helped
to create a very special and unique aura that is
now indelibly inked in my memory bank.
Yes, we brought the wines from
our cellar. When I purchased them about 6
years ago, for a pittance what they are worth
today, I fantasized about sharing and
enjoying them just as we did! Just thinking
about it gives me a warm and satiated feeling. AND
this is exactly why you should reward yourself by
purchasing exceptional wines; you are investing in
planning pleasure for the future.
So here is an opportunity not
to miss. An affordable Tuscano of great pedigree,
place and vintage. A wine you can count
on for extended pleasure seeking!
The 2004 Fontodi Riserva Vigna del
Sorbo is a specific vineyard blend of
80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Conca
d' Oro (the "Golden Basin") which lies just south of the
pastoral village of Panzono in the Chianti Classico
region of Tuscano. At 400 meters above sea
level, and situated with an ideal southern exposure
in a natural amphitheatre of well drained marl-rich
soil, perfect ripening is acheived in the best vintages:
The result is a telltale, "glossy", high
toned, intensely expressive red cherry
fruit. The well established, 30 year old vines
in Vigna del Sorbo are at their prime. There may never
be a better vintage, although 2006 looks at least as
promising. The grapes are hand picked and carefully
sorted, then fermented over 16 to 18 days and "treaded"
daily. After final assemblage, the wine is aged
for 18 months in French barrique
(Allier).
The Vigna del Sorbo must be
tasted to believe. You will be impressed by its
stature, but amazed by the wine's nuance and
complexity. Some of you will remember my
recent hard core passion for the 2001 Quorum...... The
Vigna del Sorbo emotes
a similar enthusiasm from
me.
From the Robert Parker's Wine
Advocate -
".....is an
explosive wine endowed with a layered, sumptuous
expression of sweet dark fruit. Menthol, licorice
and floral overtones develop in the glass, adding futher
complexity. This stunningly beautiful wine offers
tremendous persistence yet it will require patience as
its structural components are formidable....simply put,
2004 is a phenomenal vintage for this
wine....anticipated maturity 2012
to 2024." -
