Trick or Treat with The Prisoner, Duckhorn, Lewis....
October 29, 2008

A couple of weeks ago I wrote in my newsletter about the tremendous success of Dave Phinney's Orin Swift "The Prisoner".  I stated that after just four vintages, The Prisoner was being emulated by some new "cellmates", with similar, but differently sourced Zinfandel based cuvees:  Flattery is the ultimate compliment.  But, I shouldn't have given Dave Phinney all the trend setting credit.

Please forgive me Duckhorn, but how could I forget your Zinfandel based Bordeaux blend Paraduxx??????  Released 14 vintages ago, each vintage Paraduxx celebrates an artist label series with a different artist's signature medium and style interpreted through a pair of ducks native to the Pacific Flyway.  For the 2006 vintage South Dakota artist Mark Anderson created an acrylic painting of a pair of Cinnamon Teal.  The 2006 Paraduxx will be released this weekend, but no need to travel to the winery, as it will be included in our tasting bar line up of unique Zinfandel blends.

The 2006 Paraduxx is a blend of selected Napa Valley fruit, and incorporates 64% Zinfandel, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. The wine has a dense color with a red cherry hue.  Aromas of plum, chocolate, and cherry pie are accentuated by hints of violet, clove, cinnamon spice and vanilla bean.  Bright red fruit flavors of Bing cherry, strawberry and raspberry, are contrasted by dark compelling layers of blueberry, mocha and molasses.  The wine shows great structure with smooth, fine tannins, a black pepper mid-palate, and a long nutmeg and red currant finish.  - Winemaker, Bill Nancarrow.
