Asparagus, Fennel, Leek Soup recipe posted by Renee
Dear Wine Friend,

Two weeks ago, the just released 07 Kanonkop Kadette stood upright at attention against all the "big guns" in our Saturday blind tasting!  It did not flinch a muscle, but many tasters had to do a quick about face towards the Kadette's place on the racks when they realized their favorite of the day was one of the world's greatest wine values, and from from South Africa to boot??!!  I felt a little sneaky, but I needed to prove a point. But it's little wonder.... The 2009 Platter's Guide, recognized as South Africa's consumate annual reference guide to wine, named Kanonkop "Winery of the Year", and honored Kanonkop's 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon "Wine of the Year".  Additionally, at the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) held last November in London, Kanonkop's winemaker Abrie Beeslaar was named "International Winemaker of the Year".  The Kanonkop Kadette is considered the winery's second label to its Cabernet Sauvignon.

This fourth generation family estate winery is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch region.  Kanonkop is derived from a kopje (small hilltop) from which a canon would be fired to alert farmers in the outlying areas that a Dutch trade entering Table Bay for a stopover in Cape Town.  Consider this your warning shot!!  There are exactly 22 cases of the 07 Kanonkop Kadette remaining on inventory with our distributor, and all of them are scheduled for delivery this Friday.

The 07 Kadette is a Bordeaux blend with a little twist.  The primary grape is 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 27% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc, and then the balance is measured with South Africa's signature grape Pinotage (a viticulture cross of Pinot Noir, and the Rhone varietal Cinsault, developed in 1925).  Curiously, difficult to warmup to as a stand alone, we found Pinotage performs some kind of amazing miracles when used as a blending component, especially in a role similar to the Kadette.  A balancing accord is struck, adding a juiciness to the mid palate, a brightness to the fruit, and a nuance of spicy green peppercorn to the aroma profile.....somewhat similar to Chilean Carmeniere.  This Kadette easily passes inspection with its easy, soft lush entry, chunky size dark cherry fruit, and fairly long striding finish.  All of this for $13.50 a bottle!!

Other news!

We found another seven cases of the 2005 Vinos de Terrunos Mas Negre Priorat.  It was the headliner in last week's newsletter and sold out quickly. These cases arrive on Friday, so please reserve now if you missed out, or want more as many of you have already reloaded after tasting.  I will hold pricing to $22.50 a bottle (should be $30+), or $19.95 on six or more bottles.

Late Sunday night I received an email from two customers up in Lake Oewego, Oregon.  They were both rejoicing and binging on a stash of Wine Consultant vino one had just driven up from Davis to share.  They wanted another case of this amazing Priorat value!  Here is an edited paste from the email:
