Dear Wine Friend,

This is the first in a series of weekend getaway destinations we want to share with you.  If you live in northern California, each destination should be no more than a easy two to three hour drive for you.  If you live outside the area, and plan a trip to northern California, consider including our destinations in your itinerary planning.  Our purpose is to keep you off the tourist trail, with unsolicited, personal recommendations from first hand experiences.

Sausalito

When it's HOT in Sacramento, we love to escape the heat and head for the coast.  Sausalito is one of our favorite destinations.  Shopping the unique boutiques, browsing the art galleries, or just walking down along the docks is fun.  Even in the cooler, less touristy months, Sausalito is a great place for a romantic "hunker down" to forget about the hub bub!

Hotel Accommodation:

Inn Above Tide

Right on the water, in a prime location adjacent to the ferry terminal with unobtructed views across the bay of Tiburon, Belvedere, Angel Island, and San Francisco.  Try to reserve a first floor room so you are directly over the water. Parking is available on the property. Bring plenty of wine and provisions as you may not want to leave your room with private deck.  However, all the shops and galleries are walkable, bicycles are free to use, and the ferry is easy and fun to take across to San Francisco.

Restaurants:

During the summer months be sure to try for brunch.  Great location in one of the marina harbors.  Open and airy on nice days.  Feels like you could be on the French Riviera.  Classic bistro menu with an emphasis on fresh fish and shell fish.  Casual.  $15 corkage.

Hidden back in the docks!  Ever changing chalkboard menu with freshest fish anywhere!  Love the ceviche, Portugese red chowder, and grilled sardine po' boy!  Always difficult to decide. Counter service.  Large portions.  Expensive, but worth it!  Cash only.  ATM available. Grab a table out on the deck.  Recommended for lunch.  Limited wine and beer menu. $15 corkage, but 100% is donated back to the non-profit sailing program "Camp Clipper".

Just a few blocks off the main drag, but easily within walking distance for an evening stroll, Sushi Ran is very special dining destination as it has been rated a Michelin one star.  Very innovative Pacific cuisine, combines with creative, but classic Japanese sushi with much of its fresh fish flown in daily from the Tsukiji fish market in Toyko.  Service is very helpful and exceeded our expectations.  Expensive, but again worth the experience!  Excellent wine selections and a nine page Sake menu!

Poggio is just a two minute walk from your hotel room.  This Italian restaurant is a perrenial favorite of San Francisco Chronicle's restaurant critic Michael Bauer, and is always included in his Top 100 Bay Area Restaurants of the Year.  We agree, and wish Poggio was closer to home!   The rustic, seasonally inspired menu combines spit-roasted and slow braised meats perfect for the cool, foggy Sausalito nights.  We had amazing cuts and cracklings off a whole roasted pig, with a glorious 2000 Ghisolfi Bricco Visette from Barolo we brought along for the ride!  But all of the menu is fabulous and well executed from the house-cured salumi, housemade pastas, to the wood oven blistered Neapolitan pizzas.  Even the vegetables and herbs are picked fresh from the restaurant's hillside organic garden.  Reasonable prices.  Handsome decor and warm ambiance.  Make this your special evening to celebrate.  The professional staff is friendly, polished, and anticipates to please.  Corkage is $20 a bottle, but waived for every bottle purchased off the wine list.

OPTION!

Although we have not personally stayed at the new resort spa Cavallo Point Lodge on the parade grounds of the former Fort Baker, just under the north span of the Golden Gate Bridge, we have visited the excellent restaurant Murray Circle on numerous occasions.  One-star Michelin award winning cuisine by Chef Joseph Humphrey, formerly of Meadowood in St. Helena, is well worth the round trip cab ride from Inn Above Tide.  Also, consider Murray Circle as a brunch option. Sit on the porch so you don't miss the breathtaking views across the bay of the San Francisco skyline, and the ever changing weather through the Gate.  Even in the "warm" months carry a sweater during the day.
