L’Ermitage, Roederer Estate’s special Tête de Cuvée, is a sparkling wine made only in exceptional years from pre-selected, estate-grown grapes. Carrying on the tradition of Champagne Louis Roederer in France, Roederer Estate produces its sparkling wines in the traditional French methode champenoise, and adds special oak-aged for 5 years reserve wine to each blend. L’Ermitage debuted with the 1989 vintage. This wine is typically an even divide of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
“Sparkling Extravagant, yet balanced and refined, with lush, crisp brioche, fresh ginger and spice, roasted hazelnut and Asian pear flavors that fan out on the lengthy finish. Drink now through 2020. From California.—T.F” – 95 points, Wine Spectator (Dec 5, 2018)
I don’t believe there has there has never been a higher scoring California methode champenoise-sparkling wine by Wine Spectator. If so, I guarantee, it was not at this price.
Our ice chest is full, but anytime we drive out to the Albion coastline via Anderson Valley in the heart of Mendocino, just before we head down into the redwoods, we always stop for a “rest” at Roederer Estate and to secure a few bottles of its signature Tete d’ Cuvee L’Ermitage Brut. The L’Ermitage Rose is exceptional too!
