Contrada Santo Spirito di Passopisciaro is part of a small portfolio of boutique estates owned by wine enthusiast and entrepreneur Antonio Moretti. His other properties include Tenuta Sette Ponti in Tuscany, Orma in Bolgheri, and Feudo Maccari in Sicily.
Morretti fell in love with the 14 ha estate planted to autochthonous grapes between 500-700m, located between Passopisciaro and Randazzo, on the slopes of Mount Etna. We too share his passion and are totally infatuated with the beauty of this area.
This 100% nerello mascalese is crafted from 60+ year old ungrafted vines, planted on a combination of volcanic derived soils ranging from pebbles, gravel and volcanic ash. The higher elevation provides a significant diurnal temperature range which results in slower ripening, full phenolic ripeness, but still fresh mouth-watering acid balance. The grapes are fermented in a combination of used wood and stainless. where the wine rested for six months.
“The 2014 Etna Rosso Animardente shows dark consistency and a beautifully saturated garnet color. This is a solid and well-made expression from Etna that offers more plushness and richness than many of its peers. There’s a greater level of concentration here. The warm and sunny conditions of this happy vintage have left their mark. Spice, dried berry, cassis, lavender flower and polished river stone all play supporting roles. The wine is elegant and poised. 2017-2025” – 93 points, Wine Advocate (ML) – August 2017
“Medium-bodied and balanced, showing a pleasing range of crushed and dried cherry fruit, sage, leather and spice flavors meshed with creamy tannins and lightly juicy acidity. Drink now through 2024.” – 90 points, Wine Spectator (2018)
Focus and transparency! Enticing aromas of dried red berries and bing cherry, floral spice and garrigue, and ashy minerality. Medium bodied. Finely knit and integrated tannin. Extended finish emphasizing freshness and acidity. – ES
