Vasse Felix became Margaret River‘s founding wine estate, when Dr. Tom Cullity first planted vines in the region back in 1967! We have been patiently waiting for the arrival of the 2016 Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon, which we felt was another standout value we procured from our appointments in the Wilyabrup region of Margaret River near the town of Cowaramup; almost a microcosm of Bordeaux, as the soils are all alluvial based, and the climate is influenced by the Indian Ocean only a few miles away. More specifically, this is the very same area where we found other outstanding wines from Xanadu, Howard Park, and Cullen. It certainly seems to be ground zero for the finest Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Margaret River.
The 2016 “Filius” has intense and focused cassis-like and dark berry fruits, but its serious “zip-line” structure is all business, while still providing a lush, juicy early drink experience if you don’t want to wait a few more years for the magic of cellaring. Add on nuances of spicy tobacco leaf, cedar, and a dusty gravel minerality and you want to shout “Mais Oui Oui Monsieur!” 86% Cabernet Sauvignon with 14% Malbec. French oak barrique aging for 12 month in only 19% new and 81% used (1-5 years). Alcohol is 13.5%.
OK HOLD EVERYTHING!!! The 2016 Vasse Felix “Filius” has yet to be rated, BUT the 2015 Filius which IS STILL AVAILABLE received 92 points from Wine Spectator, and was ranked at #58 in the Wine Spectator’s 2018 Top 100 Wines of the Year. GET THIS! We have sampled BOTH vintages, and prefer the 2016.
2015 Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon
“Opens with a fresh green accent reminiscent of tomato leaf and sage, giving a savory, peppery note to the plush, velvety cassis and plum core. Finds balance between grace and power, with spice and herb elements lingering on the finish. Drink now through 2028. 800 cases imported. – 92 points, Wine Spectator (June 30th, 2018)
