I must say, the 2015 “Mangan” is definitely a “Merlot” on a much grander, massive scale than most will expect from the variety or a blend that only includes 12% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot.  Very saturated, dark, almost opaque purple color is the first hint.  The aromas are a mix of damp, black loamy soils from a eucalyptus forest.  Ripe black fruits and spice on the expansive palate. Notes of dark chocolate and black licorice too.  Perhaps a little more time in the 42% new French oak barrique than 7 months could have helped to soften the evident and unexpected powerful tannin that carries the lengthy finish; but then I do applaud the winemaker’s restraint too.  Unless you have a hunk of Prime Rib to test a bottle, I would not sacrifice any of this outrageous value at this time.  More balanced and in focused, but still kicking it and fighting strong after opening 48 hours ago.  Cellaring potential is obvious, and really required to bring this wine to full fruition.  Only 15 six packs available –  ES

Lifted aromas of ripe dark fruits, roses and violets are lifted by a touch of spiciness. The palate shows a very attractive blend of plum, cherry and spice flavors. A juicy and balanced wine that is backed by fine grained tannins. With careful cellaring it will continue to gracefully develop for at least ten years.- Cullen Winery

This wine was made from a carefully selected blend of Merlot (84%), Malbec (12%) and Petit Verdot (4%) grown on the Mangan Vineyard, which has been shown to be ideally suited to nurturing these three grape varieties. They all performed very well in this vintage and thus facilitated the production of this particularly flavorsome and complex wine. Another very good growing season with no rain at all in January and February.

The fruit was carefully sorted before fermentation with indigenous yeasts and malolactic bacteria. No acid or yeast was added, producing a wine which has a sense of place through the grapes and natural winemaking techniques employed.  7 months in 42% new French oak barrique.  14% alcohol
