I keep harping about the overall greatness of the 2015 and 2016 Tuscan vintages! Well, here is the good fortune and opportunity to seize a very rare, affordable, highest rated (96 points by Wine Spectator**), single vineyard Chianti Classico Riserva from the 2015 vintage!
Only 900 cases of the 2015 Fattoria Poggerino Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla were produced (200 cases imported) from the organically farmed, 12 hectare estate in the commune of Radda. One of the highest elevated villages at almost 1800 feet, the Bugialla vineyard sits on broken, well draining galestro (a rocky, schist-like clay soil often containing calcareous deposits), found in only the best Tuscan vineyards and most compatible for growing Sangiovese. Poggerino wines are produced exclusively from its own grapes. The Bugialla vineyard was planted in 1973. Only 100% Sangiovese is hand selected, picked and sorted, then destemmed. The fermentation is spontaneous from the vineyard’s indigenous yeast. The vinification and maceration process takes place in concrete tanks for up to 55 days until the wine is racked into 20/25hl Slavonian oak where it remains for 18 months. The wine then rests for a minimum of 12 months in bottle before release.
** “A mix of pure cherry and cigar humidor aromas lead off, with the cherry theme continuing, supported by rosemary, iron and tar flavors. Big, burly tannins line the finish and should carry this wine for another few decades. Best from 2023 through 2040. 900 cases made, 200 cases imported.” – 96 points Wine Spectator (October 31st, 2018) — BS (btw – no other ratings to quote)
