Time to get SERIOUS! Perhaps a new wine for you? I have not been able to secure a bottle of Tenuta ARGENTIERA since the 2004 vintage! But most of you are aware of the Bolgheri DOC along the Tuscan coast line where Argentiera resides along with the ultra super players of region like Tenuta San Guido’s Sassicaia, Tenuta dell’ Ornellaia – Masseto, Le Macchiole – Messorio and Paleo, Tenuta Guado al Tasso, Orma, Podere Sapaio, Chiappini, and the cult followed Duemani to name a few! Yes, this region is NOT known for Sangiovese, but rather the exemplary Cabernet Sauvignon based blends that easily compete with the best produced in Bordeaux and Napa Valley. Bolgheri is NOT a new and emerging region, rather one that began earning its stellar reputation as a fine collectible beginning back with 1968 vintage when the first commerical Sassicaia was produced. That said, the 2015 is one of the finest all time vintages for the DOC, actually for all of Tuscany. Which brings us full circle, and my good fortune to sample the riveting 2015 ARGENTIERA Bolgheri Superiore DOC last Friday afternoon.
Immediately, I felt I could be drinking a “dead ringer” for a perfectly balanced, well stacked, top Grand Cru Bordeaux; but slightly leaning towards the Right Bank, than the Left. Makes sense when one learns the blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak barrique (see the attached pdf.). Revelation! Deceptively inviting now, but so impeccably balanced and perfectly sculpted, it can only get better and better. Extremely complex, with layers of cassis fruit infused with Bolgheri garrigue. Long lingering finish just keeps on going. Highlights Argentiera on the Bolgheri map! Top quality. Pure pleasure!
Although the 2015 Argentiera has yet to be rated by Wine Advocate, other major critics are weighing in with resounding accolades; 95 point from Wine Spectator and 99 points from James Suckling..Best part!

“A delightful nose of creme de cassis, hot stones and crushed violets and spices. Full body, chewy and super polished tannins and a long finish, which really takes off thanks to electric acidity. An essay in balance and depth. Best ever. Puts Argentiera with the best of the best in Tuscany. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc”. 99 points, Jame Suckling
“Sleek and elegant, featuring black currant, violet, iron, licorice, olive, tobacco and spice flavors. Deftly balanced, picking up rosemary, juniper and pine accents as this plays out on the long, cohesive finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2023 through 2042″ – 95 points, Wine Spectator
