“The peachy and aromatic 2016 Leirana Finca Genoveva has a sharp palate with the firm texture provided by the granite and good acidity, but it’s a little rounder and more approachable than the sharp 2015. This has Albariño character—it’s floral and expressive but marked by the soil; it’s a serious wine, really very good value for the quality it delivers. Forjas del Salnés doesn’t put the wines through malolactic, so they wait for good ripeness and lower levels of malic acidity. So, in 2016 they harvested well after the rains. 2016 is a cool and wet year with lots of challenges, perhaps in the style of 2013. The rest of Spain was marked by frost in 2017, but it was a warmer and very healthy year in Rías Baixas with good ripeness and very integrated acidity. For Rodrigo Méndez, 2017 is the best he’s seen so far, perhaps only surpassed by 2018. When I asked him about 2015 he told me that it was a year with high acidity and that he feels the wines are going to take time; he sees better balance in 2017. So far, warm vintages seem to favor the zone, years like 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017 and even 2018, which was cold and late in most of Spain, but here they saw a very warm August and September after a cold growing season, so they got to the harvest in perfect conditions of ripeness and health while keeping good acidity. All of the wines, except the young Leirana white, are fermented like they were 40 years ago—without temperature control in used oak containers with indigenous yeasts, with no malolactic. This is how they feel the wines show the personality of the places, even if stainless steel and temperature control might result in more fruit and aromas. There is a new wine they call Leirana Arenales de Arra that is from very sandy, beach-like soils in the zone of Arra in the parish of Sanxenxo, 100 meters away from the sea.”
