Made from equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Campanaio is the result of meticulous attention starting with the selection of the plants themselves. Alessandro Cellai began by searching for superior rootstocks and clones and quickly found a passion. His painstaking efforts have resulted in a wine of considerable personality, one that fully shows the characteristics of the international favorites without disguising the unique aspects of the local terroir.
Super low yielding (1.2 tons per acre) from 4 acre site on calcareous sandy-loam at 1600 feet above sea level. Aged for one year in new French barrique (225L).
“The 2016 Campanaio is a luscious and delicious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in equal parts. The folks at Podere Monastero have hit that perfect ripeness, that proverbial sweet spot, with extravagant aromas of dried blackberry, cherry liqueur, mocha and spicy cedar smoke. The Italians would call a wine like this “piacione” because it is likable on a large scale (and knows it). The over-ripeness you get in the Pinot Nero La Pineta translates into optimal ripeness in the case of this wine. The wine ages in 70% new oak. Only 5,000 bottles were made.” – 94 points, Wine Advocate (ML)
“Thick and opaque, this fruit-filled youngster boasts black currant, blackberry, ink and meaty flavors. Dense and monolithic for now, with a saturated finish of fruit, mineral and spice. Shows fine potential. Best from 2020 through 2030. 400 cases made.” – 93 points, Wine Spectator –BS
