San Lazzaro was established in 2003. Its 15 hectares of vineyards are located in the Offida municipality, the heart of the Rosso Piceno Superiore, which is one of the historic Italian DOCs (Denominazione di Origine Controllata). The proprietary red Podere 72 is sourced from organically farmed 15 year old vines growing in clay soils with a western exposure at 500 feet above sea level; 50/50% Montepulciano and Sangiovese. Yield are typically about 2.5 tons per acre. All the fruit is hand picked the first 10 days of October. After a temperature controlled fermentation and numerous pump overs for up to 8 days, the wine is racked into new and used French oak barrels for 9 months of aging. The wine is rested for another 6 months in bottle.
Always a densely colored deep ruby with purple highlights, this wine sings with aromas and flavors of dark berries and black cherries. Perfectly balanced on the palate and already displaying some refinement, this wine will provide great service for at least another 5-8 years. When available, the Podere 72 has been one of the most popular red values we stock. This excellent vintage will be no different!!
