Alessandro and his brother Manuele manage about 7 hectares of vineyards on the sandstone-marl (“ponka”) scattered around their village of Povoletto in the Colli Orientali of Friuli.
Farming is completely organic, sustainable and natural; no chemicals, no pesticides, no herbicides. .The grapes are harvested by hand. In the cellar the fermentation is only with natural yeasts. There are no clarifications or stabilizers. Natural racking and non-filtration.
This delicious Refosco was pressed and left to macerate and fermentation in large oak vats with natural yeasts of the grapes at natural temperature for about 20 days. Frequent pumping over insures the extraction of color and helps malolactic fermentation.
10 months in oak barrels in contact with fermentation yeasts (lees) periodically kept in suspension. Then in the bottle for 4 months before the sale.
Nicely perfumed, violets, berries, and dark loam. Chewy, vibrant, bright, mid-weight on the palate. Complementary balance of savory and succulent. Flavors of dark fruits and spices that just explode on the palate, punctuated by great tannic structure and energy. Hand harvested, dried for 25 days, pressed and fermented on native yeast in large oak open top casks for 20 days, then pumped into neutral oak barrels and aged for 10 month on the lees, bottled and aged an additional 4 months before release.
