Once again, the Tavignano Misco has achieved the coveted Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri award! Even though the vintage was difficult with scorching summer heat, the finished beauty displays its “savory elegance”.
On May 1st we met with Tavignano’s Ordine de la Feld at A16 in San Francisco to discuss and sample her new releases. She is on tour as a member of a select troupe of 15 of Italy’s most significant women winemakers traveling to major US cities. Stylistically the wines are very similar to her previous vintages. Very high quality! Emphasis is on ripening stages, balance and the refined and beautiful fresh acidity from the nearby Esino and Musone rivers and the Adriatic. Nuances of salty minerality. Stainless steel fermentation and aging on the fine lees seems to display the transparency and purity we find so appealing. The “green” first pick Villa Torre is a splendid value (Due Bicchieri!), citrusy and stone fruit, but just not as smooth and elegant as the classy 2017 Misco which displays sublime and perfectly ripened sliced pear. We had an opportunity to taste the 2014 Misco Riserva from magnum, and found the emerging minerality and more pronounced depth of nectarine fruit to be dazzling. Yes, these wines will age successfully if you can resist temptation. Personally, I like to drink them while young and fresh!
