Rock star Portugese producer for very high quality Alvarinho (Albarino). on the border of northern Portugal along the Monção River and Spain’s Rias Baixas region. This is typically one of the finest values in Vinho Verde. It ages effortlessly. It’s concentrated and structured. Plus, enough is produced to make it a little easier to acquire than some specialty bottlings. Sourced from 25-year-old vines, this shows off that bit of “Soalheiro Green,” then adds a big finish and a concentrated mid-palate to accompany the herbs. Ripe, fruity and deliciously gulpable.
“The 2018 Alvarinho, the so-called unoaked “classico,” is dry (three grams of residual sugar as against 6.1 grams of total acidity) and comes in at 12.5% alcohol. A little understated this year, this shows ripe fruit, flavor and a surprisingly long finish as it airs out. That said, it seems to be a bit more in the middle of the road this year. We’ll see how this progresses—they often develop well. There were about 100,000 bottles sourced from 25-year-old vines.” – 89 points, Mark Squires, Wine Advocate (May 2019)
