Château de Saint Cosme is the leading estate of Gigondas and produces the benchmark wines of the appellation. The property has been in the hands of the Barruol family since 1570. Louis Barruol took over from his father in 1992 making a dramatic shift to quality and converting to bio-dynamics in 2010.
Saint Cosme Côtes-du-Rhône is produced from 100% Syrah and is from the rocky (limestone deposits!) and cool vineyards of Vinsobres and the stony Villafranchian terraces of the Gard. Vinsobres brings freshness and complexity while the terraced vineyards of the Gard contribute color and power. The wine is partially de-stemmed, fermented with natural yeasts, and vinified in concrete vats where it remains to age for six months before being bottled unfiltered. No oak.
The 2018 St. Cosme is the 4th consecutive vintage we have stocked. The wine is the model of consistency, and always represents an excellent quality to value ratio. We sampled a bottle yesterday and you can rest assured it will make for fine drinking over the next 3+ years. No, this is not an over ripe, high alcohol, jam bomb. On the contrary! Even though the wine is medium to full bodied; restraint, finesse and freshness are its virtues. Expect purple and blue fleshy plums and berries. Nuances of violets, black pepper, fennel, and even a little pencil lead. A soft and easy mouthful, with a playful, non-offending tannin on the finish. Perfect with your bbq’d tri-tip or brisket!
