The word malleolus comes from Latin and means majuelo, which is a name for a vineyard in Pesquera de Duero. This wine was made from selected grapes coming from majuelos of between 25 and 75 years old, where the vines are both free-standing bush vines and also trained on wires. The wine stayed in contact with the skins for a period of 28 days, and was then aged in Allier French oak barrels 18 months prior to its bottling.

The wine displays an intense cherry-red colour with violet undertones. Powerful aromas on the nose with ripe red berry fruit (blackberries and mulberries), intermingled with good, elegant oak and hints of spice. The palate combines perfectly the sweetness of the ripe tannins with the polyphenolic structure of the tinto fino grape. Full and powerful with a delicious finish, which constantly evokes the ripe grapes on the vine and the land they grow on.

The 2005 Malleolus is 100% Tinta del Pais which was barrel-fermented and aged for 18 months in French oak. Dark ruby-colored, it offers an expressive perfume of toasty oak, pencil lead, spice box, mineral, and black fruits. This is followed by a structured, firm wine that has excellent depth and length. It will evolve for 5-7 years and provide pleasure through 2020. Importer: Jorge Ordonez - 93 points, Jay Miller - Wine Advocate
