CAPÇANES Cellars has always been a “go to” producer for excellent value red wines. Situated in the Montsant region a 100 miles southwest of Barcelona, about 20 miles inland from the Mediterranean sea, and just a short entryway to the remote Priorat region which it surrounds. Here, there is grape growing history here going back to the middle ages.
But I can not recall ever finding such a “more spicy-splendid” deal as this 2014 Mas Picosa (“more spicy”) which is composed of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah from organically farmed 10-40+ year old bush vines on decomposed granite sand and schist. All stainless steel tank fermentation and sur lie aging for five month, so this wine does not see one splinter of oak.
2014 was one of the cooler vintages in the Priorat which bodes will for this wine. Mas Picosa has always been produced for immediate appeal and drinkability, but be assured in 2020 it is STILL DRINKING with delightful FRESHNESS and yummy, spicy cherry and raspberry aromas and fruit flavors. Soft and perfect for the warm weather approaching with a light chill if you want. Versatile with numerous food companions from burgers, tacos, fajitas, and pizza to grilled chicken or salmon…..or by itself.
I can’t understand why this wine is still available, let alone at discount? Probably because there were never any ratings to help promote confidence or sales. We are all the beneficiary NOW. Here is to guilt free wine consumption and money well spent. Should be $17.95 – NOW just $12.95 a bottle! BACK UP THE TRUCK!
