Named after Raul Perez’s favorite London restaurant “Sketch”, this Albarino is sourced from a vineyard located in Dena, around 500 feet from the Atlantic Ocean and a watery stretch of the Ria Arousa in Rias Baixas, Galicia. A collaboration between Raul and vineyard owner Rodigo Mendez of Forjas Del Salnes who is one of the finest producers of “old style” Albarino in the region.
Typically harvested 1-2 weeks later than other coastal vineyards of Albarino, Sketch is fermented and aged (without malolactic) in two 700-liter barrels for 12 months. The 2003 vintage gained instant fame when the aging process was continued for another 60 days in the bottle at 30 meter under the sea in the Arousa estuary.
Due to a large amount of spoilage from one vintage, now Raúl Pérez ages only a small percentage of Sketch Albariño underwater only for research purposes. All commercially available Sketch is aged on land.
“The one exceptional Albariño produced with the help of Rodrigo Méndez of Forjas del Salnés within Rías Baixas but sold without appellation of origin is the 2015 Sketch. This is an exceptionally fresh vintage of this Albariño that is usually a little riper and wider and often with a touch of botrytis, and this year is more mineral and sharp, more in the style of the wines from Forjas del Salnés, with a salty, mineral finish. I believe this is going to age exceptionally well. 1,500 bottles were filled in September 2016.” – 94 points, Wine Advocate (LG)
