2019 WINE SPECTATOR – #24/TOP 100 WINE OF THE YEAR
Since we first purchased the 2007 Black Slate Porrera Priorat, this label has remained a great value, and grown to be one of the store’s fastest selling wines upon release. Even though Black Slate is an ongoing negociant series of wines sourced from the Priorat region with a focus on the Burgundy village model, its great success has done more to familiarize consumers with Priorat and its communes than any of area’s most famous and expensive producers or pioneers. Spanish importer Eric Solomon, Bixente Oçafrain, and the internationally renown wine consultant Philippe Cambie collaborate in the creation of Black Slate La Vilella Alta by selecting Garnacha and Carinyena grown on both licorella and clay limestone soils. A blend of old and young-vine fruit and with a small additions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, La Vilella Alta is a dense and intensively flavored wine that is fermented in tank and aged in French oak barrels of which 30% are new.
“Smart Buys” – “This generous red features a round, soft texture that carries ripe black fruit flavors, laced with licorice, toast and loamy earth notes. Offers well-integrated tannins and gentle acidity. Pretty floral and cinnamon details emerge on the finish. Drink now through 2028.” – 93 points (Wine Spectator) – Oct 15, 2019.
