Boscarelli was founded in 1962 by Egidio Corradi, a native of Montepulciano who made his career in Milan and Genoa as an international broker. His daughter, Paola De Ferrari Corradi, unexpectedly found herself in charge of the company in 1983 following the sudden loss of her husband, Ippolito De Ferrari, in a road accident. Today, Paola and her sons, Luca and Nicolò De Ferrari (pictured from left to right), oversee the winemaking and vineyard management, farming 59 acres of vineyards located mainly in the Cervognano zone of Montepulciano.

The Boscarelli Vino Nobile comes from a selection of parcels around the property, blending roughly 90 percent Sangiovese, with indigenous grapes like Canaiolo contributing the remainder. Il Nocio and Costa Grande are both 100 percent Sangiovese single-vineyard bottlings; Il Nocio has a southwestern exposure, while Costa Grande’s is northeastern. Sotto Casa comes from the original Boscarelli vineyard, planted in 1965. Today, the blend is 85 percent Sangiovese with small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. All wines are aged in French and Slavonian oak barrels and casks in varying sizes from 300 to 30,000 liters.—Bruce Sanderson

“Expressive and harmonious, this red exhibits cherry, blackberry, violet and mineral aromas and flavors. Pure and elegant, with an underlying tension and intensity that drives the lingering aftertaste of fruit, stone and earth, showing a hint of wild herbs. Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Mammolo and Colorino. Best from 2022 through 2038.” 94 points. Wine Spectator —B.S.
