2016 Farella Malbec, Coombsville AVA – Napa Valley

2016 Farella Malbec, Coombsville AVA – Napa Valley

This is the just released 2016 vintage…..from perhaps the finest Napa Valley vintage this century.  Maybe 50 cases produced!?  75?  Extraordinarily rare!  Grand slam home run quality and best value!

The winery does not offer much information about this wine, but we have been fortunate enough to purchase about 2-3 cases every vintage since 2012.  We divide up the pie for “those who know”, and it always disappears instantly.  Looks like production has been ramped up, and now there are eight cases allocated for us.  It will still sell out in a FLASH!

Winemaker Ryan Pass says, “I am really proud of the 2016 Malbec and excited to share it.  I stopped using new oak on the Malbec and started picking a little bit earlier….I think overall the wine is much more balanced.”

100% Malbec.  EXTREMELY saturated dark purple color and opaque in the glass.  Aromas and intense flavors of ripe wild blackberries, cassis, purple violets, with a nuance of ash minerality.  Concentrated, mouth filling, and with great purity and freshness on the palate.  “Old school” Napa Valley tannins are youthful and integrated, and are complimented by vibrant acidity in the long tapper finish.  Excellent balance.  14.2% Alcohol.  A stunning Malbec with a very promising future.

Farella estate vineyard spans 26 acres and is situated in the Coombsville AVA just to the east of the city of Napa against the Vaca  Mountains.  The soils range from stony to gravelly loam and volcanic ash.  Farming has always been strictly sustainable and organic.  Only 1800 cases are produced for the winery sales (mostly Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon), with most of the production as a source for many noted wineries including Opus 1, Realm, Pahlmeyer, Far Niente, Lail, Beau Vigne, Keenan and many more.
