2016 Lisini Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscana, Italy

I usually just rack IT because I want to have a fabulous Brunello value to reward those who take time shop in our store.  But it’s been a year with extremely limited browsing, so here’s the DEAL!!

One of the oldest, historic and most traditional wineries, LISINI is without doubt one the best kept “secrets” when looking for the best quality-to-value ratio from Brunello di Montalcino.  Lisini is ideally situated at about 380 meters in the hills surrounding Sant’Angelo in Colle, in the warm, but ventilated southwest corner of Montalcino.  Truly a reference point “old school” estate, and leader in the region since first planting its Sangiovese vineyards back in 1930, Lisini always over performs, and its stellar 2016 is certainly not the exception.

Here is a Brunello that has been matured in large, very old (neutral) Slavonian oak barrels for 42 months. And then without filtration, bottled and refined for another 6-8 months.  I guarantee you will be more than rewarded for many years with just a little patience now.  See the glowing reviews below.  WE 96, DE 95, WS 94, Wine Advocate – N/R

“Inviting aromas of ripe wild berry, baking spice and Mediterranean herb are front and center along with a whiff of blue flower. Full bodied and vibrant, the savory palate features ripe Marasca cherry, star anise and nutmeg framed in noble tannins. Bright acidity provides freshness and balance. Give this time to fully develop and you’ll be rewarded.” – 96 points, Wine Enthusiast “Cellar Selection”.

“Lisini is one of Montalcino’s oldest estates and has been owned by the Lisini-Clementi family since the 16th century. Today, it is run by Ludovica Lisini and her cousins Carlo and Lorenzo. After a few moments in the glass, liquorice, chocolate and tobacco begin to permeate. Full yet deftly balanced, layers of grainy tannins are an equal match for the dense, dark fruit. Though ageing is in large oak casks, there is a suggestion of wood with sweet vanillin and mint. I suspect a couple more years in bottle will bring everything into exquisite cohesion.” – 95 points, Decanter

“A touch of new oak adds an element of sweetness and spice to this cherry-, plum- and mineral-flavored red, which is lithe, with well-integrated, underlying tannins and a lingering finish.” – 94 point, Wine Spectator
