2016 Parkhurst Proprietary Red “The BOX”, Rogue Valley, Oregon

2016 Parkhurst Proprietary Red “The BOX”, Rogue Valley, Oregon

Many of you will remember the Parkhurst Pinot Noir we sold earlier this year.  NOW introducing Parkhurst’s THE BOX‼

Mark Enlow transplanted from California about 7 years ago to begin Parkhurst Wine Cellars in the Rogue Valley AVA of southern Oregon. He is a Culinary Institute of America graduate, so not only a Chef (with a very discerning palate), but a vineyard-winery manager for many years.  Mark is a great example of those in the wine trade being drawn to the dynamics and viticulture diversity of the emerging Rogue Valley bordering northern California.

Enlow’s willingness to adventure and invest, and love for wild west history are the origin of the Parkhurst name which pays homage to the pioneering spirit, adversity, and legendary story of “One-eyed” Charley Parkhurst. Orphaned at a very early age and striking out alone at just 12 years of age, Charley lost an eye while working with an unruly horse.  Regardless, Charley began working with large teams of horses, and became renown over the years as “The Whip” while running stagecoaches loaded with gold, valuable cargo, and passengers, often with inclement weather and over the untamed territory between California and Oregon.  A trail weary and weather-beaten Charley eventually retired, but it was only after Parkhurst’s death, when the coroner collected the body, did it become evident that Charley was actually Charlotte Parkhurst. (< click on this link for full story!)

In those days of “yesteryear”, when highwayman robbed a stagecoach, the demand was always, “Throw down the box!”, as it was known to be full of some kind of valued treasure.

Parkhurst’s signature reserve proprietary red wine is appropriately named “THE BOX”, which is only produced in the finest vintages and from the winery’s best barrels.

The 2016 Parkhurst “THE BOX” is very compelling, mega-force blend of equal amounts of Tempranillo, Cabernet Franc, and Petite Sirah.  Each varietal was fermented separately.  After a meticulous selection process, the best lots were blended and aged for 22 months in cooper designed one-year old French oak barrels, and then racked to rest in neutral French oak barrels until bottling later in 2018.  Only 80 cases were produced.

Not distributed in California, The Wine Consultant procured and “bootlegged” the winery’s “final” twenty cases of “THE BOX” from Oregon over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend for a special customer order.  At this time ONLY 18 bottles are available at $69.95 a bottle.

Very impressed in our April tasting with Parkhurst, my notes after opening and decanting a bottle two nights ago.  “Dark ruby color.  Savory black fruits, balsamic spice, hints of vanillin and tanned leather aromas.   Medium-full bodied.  Still fresh, intense and concentrated with well-integrated tannin providing suppleness on the palate, and a long-extended finish.  Decanted, even better the next day.  Drink now thru 2030+.”
