2017 Bisci Fogliano Verdicchio di Metalica, Marche, Italy

“Bisci is a heavyweight in the small DOC Matelica. Size and quality go hand-in-hand here and Bisci wines are among the best of the Marches. I especially like the fact that they are very faithful to the Metalica terroir, steely and refined with a dry Riesling like quality to them. The Fogliano vineyard is a true Grand Cru for the Verdicchio grape.” – Ian d’Agata, Vinous

The Azienda Agricola Bisci is the result of the passion for the territory and its land of the brothers Giuseppe and Pierino Bisci who in 1972 bought a property of about 25 hectares and transformed it over the years into the reference company in the production of Verdicchio di Matelica. Today Mauro and Tito, Giuseppe’s sons, took the reins. The property is located between the provinces of Macerata and Ancona, it has an area of about 25 hectares, of which about 18 hectares are cultivated in Verdicchio and just over 2 hectares in Sangiovese and Merlot. The vineyard is located on a hill at an altitude varying between 320 and 370 meters above sea level, slightly sloping and with a prevalent southern exposure.

Farmed organically, the Vigneto Fogliano is 100% Verdicchio from 4 hectares in calcareous, clayey soil with a southern exposure at an altitude between 300 and 350m above sea level. Fermentation in glazed cement tanks with temperature control. Aged in cement on the lees for 18 months, followed by 3 months in bottle before release. 522 cases produced.  Only produced in the finest vintages.
