2017 Mount Eden Estate Chardonnay, Santa Cruz Mountains, California



Classic Burgundy-look-alikes in the Santa Cruz Mountains!  You betcha!  Ever since Paul Masson smuggled “suitcase” vine cuttings from Burgundy friend Louis Latour, the DNA is still traceable in many vineyards, especially those situated on limestone. You must take time to read the full history here at the Mount Eden Vineyards website.  I can’t think of any other domestic estate grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that exemplifies this more than Mount Eden with the exceptions being from Chalone and Calera, and with sincere apologies to Tessier and Sante Arcangeli vineyard designated SCM Pinot Noir.  On a side note, it was a group of Sacramento businessmen and doctors who were the initial investors in developing Mount Eden Vineyards (formerly the Mt Eden hilltop owned by the legendary Martin Ray)  in 1972.  I still know some of them to this day!  You see, when you purchase Mount Eden Vineyard Estate wines, not only are buying an age worthy, exquisite and distinctive terroir expression, but you are also securing heritage and the history of California viticulture in a bottle!! 

I have been given a rare opportunity to purchase a limited amount of the current 2017 Mount Eden Estate Pinot Noir and Estate Chardonnay….. Both have received 95 points from Wine Advocate;

“The 2017 Pinot Noir Estate offers savory, layered aromas of earth and laurel, charcuterie and orange peel, with amaro-laced red and black berries. The palate is grainy and fresh, with a kaleidoscope of spices and a very long finish. It’s incredibly appealing now but will benefit from a long decant. 963 cases produced.  2021-2028”

“The 2017 Chardonnay Estate is beautifully expressed this vintage, scented of warm citrus, honeycomb and a singular undercurrent of spices. The palate is satiny with full, ripe fruit energized by bright freshness and mineral character, and the wine finishes very long, pure and uplifted. It improved slowly over several days and will benefit from time in the cellar or a long decant. 1,832 cases produced.  2021-2028”
