The Piaggia Riserva 2016 from the tiny Carmignano DOCG just outside of Florence was honored by Italy’s authoritative wine guide Gambero Rosso, not only with its most coveted Tre Bicchieri award, but by being named the “Best Red of the Year” for 2020. Well, I did not expect the Riserva 2017 to repeat with that kind of accolade (no wine or winery ever has done so), but then the Piaggia Riserva 2017 has also again been honored with another Tre Bicchieri in the just published 2021 Gambero Rosso. Only 467 wines were distinguished with the “3 glass” award from the 2645 producers and 24,638 wines judged!
We are so proud and pleased for our good friend, winemaker and owner Silvia Vannucci. You can only imagine the demand, and we are still very grateful to Silvia for helping us to secure over 200 bottles of her Riserva 2016 which we sold in 2019.
I was able to sample a bottle of the Riserva 2017 Sunday night with Renee’s smoked rack of lamb, and I can vouch, it is again most worthy of this lofty recognition! An absolutely stunning and seamless amalgam of bright, juicy red fruits (80% Sangiovese with the balance a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc), showing great finesse and purity. It might just be better than the Riserva 2016! Total class, and balanced perfectly to age for at least 10 years, but so gorgeous to drink now. . Surely it will make a complementary bookend for those fortunate enough to have the 2016 to also brag about. No other ratings at this time.
