Tenuta Casadei is one of a growing number of estates located in Suvereto, southern Tuscany. Once considered Italy’s cowboy frontier with farms and rodeo-wranglers, the area is steadily evolving with a wine identity. Maybe some of California’s Rhone Rangers have transplanted, as it is very rare to find Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache grown here, let along blended in the traditional “GSM” style.
60% Syrah with equal parts of Mourvedre and Grenache are hand harvested from organically farmed 20+ year old vineyards. Destemmed and cold soaked for 4 days before fermentation in stainless steel tank, then aged for 12-14 months in 60% new French oak, and 40% used.
This wine is powerful, yet supple and elegant. The nose opens with intense red berry and cassis fruit highlighted by notes of dark chocolate and tobacco. Firm and silky upon entry, the palate is equally intense with chewy and sweet tannins and a very persistent finish with dark berries and sweet spices.
“A blend of organically farmed Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache, this opens with aromas of dark berry, thyme and cedar. The savory palate delivers mature black currant, clove and a touch of smoke alongside polished tannins.” 89 points, Wine Enthusiast, Kerin O’Keefe
