Al Passo is a small circular forest with an interior passage (“al passo”) at the highest point of the Tolaini vineyard with a breathtaking view of the towers of Siena, the town of Montalcino and Montepulciano to the east.
Al Passo is a proprietary blend of Sangiovese 34%, Merlot 33%, Cabernet Sauvignon 33% sourced from gravel sized stones in clay and limestone on the Tolaini estate,
Maturation takes place on fine lees for 6 months in French barriques and oak fermenters, then racked to spend an additional 8 months in mostly used French barriques (20% new). Aged 12 months in bottle before release.
“A beautiful, ripe wine, offering plums and chocolate, as well as tile and walnuts. It’s full and layered with beautiful fruit and caressing tannins. Rock on. Drink in 2022”- 94 points, James Suckling, com – July 2020
“The Tolaini 2017 Al Passo is always an ambitious wine that takes the best of the grapes in its blend: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Each give freshness, structure and textural fiber. Al Passo opens to dark berry fruit and plum, with spice, tobacco and tilled earth. This is a well-priced wine that promises lots of pairings, especially out of a Tuscan cookbook.” – 91 points, Wine Advocate (Monica Larner) April 2021
“A mix of black cherry, black currant, cedar, iron and tobacco flavors grace this taut red. Nicely balanced and vibrant, ends with a long, tobacco- and spice-tinged finish. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2027.” – 90 points, Wine Spectator – June 30, 2021
