Description
In 2013 Leeu Family Winery in Franschhoek (Stellenbosch) invested in a partnership with the Mullineux Winery in Swartland. Since that time the Mullineux-Leeu Family Winery has been named “Winery of the Year” by the Platter’s Guide (South Africa’s definitive wine guide) in 2014, 2016, 2019 and 2020.
JUST ANNOUNCED! This 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded the most coveted 5 Star honor by the 2021 Platter’s Guide. 9,000 wines were judged competitively for the latest guide.
This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from three distinctive cooler vineyard sites in Stellenbosch is the inaugural release:
- One parcel of 39 year old dry farmed bush vine Cabernet Sauvignon planted in deep alluvial soils (Firgrove).
- One parcels planted on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain.
- One parcel planted in the deep decomposed granite soils of the Polkadraai Hills.
All of the fruit is hand harvested and sorted, cooled and destemmed to tank. Minimal sulfur is used. The fermentation takes place naturally without inoculation. Cool temps are maintained during the ten day fermentation. After fermentation is the wine is allowed to continue maceration on the skins for about two weeks and then drained and pressed into 500L French oak barrels (30% new). The wine is racked once and then blended, while maturing for 20 months before bottling. .
This very aromatic Cabernet Sauvignon has attractive, sublime leafy herb notes including eucalyptus-mint, tarragon and sage…hints of graphite and cedar….reminds me a little of Heitz Martha’s Vineyard of yesteryear, but not nearly as pungent. The aromatic fruit is cassis, and black cherry which follow on the palate with pure precision. More Right Bank – Bordeaux-like, refined and elegant, understated but still rich and harmonious with ultra fine tannins. Extremely smooth and supple, and silky on the palate. Perfect balance. Very classy! 540 cases produced. 14% alcohol. Drinks extremely well now, but will continue to do so for years to come. Seriously! Highly Recommended!
