Indeed! The 2018 Pilcrow Cabernet Sauvignon would make a very special and distinctive Father’s Day present.
Sourced from the organically, dry farmed Hillwalker Vineyard high up on slopes of Mt. Veeder, Sara and Jonas Beer handcraft this wine like the brilliantly structured, terroir driven, “honest” Cabs from the 1990s and earlier. It certainly be stilled my heart when I sampled a bottle last week. Rarely am I so impressed! I might add the 2018 is one of the finest Napa Valley vintages since 2000, but yields were very low, and thus production meager.
How? Even though the vineyard has a southern exposure, its breezy, cooler high elevation, and proximity to the north bay protects the acidity, slows the ripening process and improves the fruit’s hangtime. This combined with non-intervention farming on the ancient uplifted ocean bed of blue shale soils stresses the vines sufficiently to intensify vivid complex floral aromatics, while accentuating deep blue fruits on a more vivid and etched, but balance framework. The welcome and youthful, but integrated tannin extends into the very refined finish, and serves as the perfect exclamation mark to this remarkable wine!
AND! The Beers refrain from using any modern winemaking techniques—like extended maceration, micro-oxygenation, residual sugar, heavy oak., etc.—that tend to homogenize the subtle differences of site.
