The iconic Polz estate was part of importer Terry Theise’s opening Austrian portfolio. And “Therese” is the best-known wine produced by Polz in Austria. Grown in their coolest, schist laden vineyards in the Kitzeck-Sausal area at an average altitude of 500 meters, it is an authoritative, slightly reduced wine that knocks out with its coiled power and spiel of fruit and mineral. The only top Sauvignon made by Polz in stainless steel. Sustainable farming. Hand picked and sorted. 100% varietal. Spontaneous fermentation. No malolactic. 9 months in stainless steel tank on lees.
“From the Sausal’s schist soils and Polz’s highest vineyard at 500 meters above sea level, the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Ried Theresienhöhe –1STK– Therese is a stainless-fermented terroir wine of great substance, grip and complexity. Pure and crystalline yet also rich and intense on the coolish and refreshing, flinty and coolish nose, this is a tightly structured yet extract-rich and thus juicy and intense Sauvignon with sur lie notes. Then, toward the finish, there’s firm mineral and phenolic grip that represents the youth of this substantial and age-worthy Therese that reveals a compact, complex and very long finish. 13.5% alcohol.” Tasted in August 2020. – 95 points, Wine Advocate (Stephan Reinhardt)
