Stefan Müller holds vineyards in the villages of Niedermennig and Krettnach. One of his pride is a parcel of 50 year-old vines situated in the western, south-west-facing part of the Niedermenniger Sonnenberg. This parcel is situated on iron-rich slate with quite some deep soil.
43g/l RS, 10.4g acid, 9% alc. From 50-year-old vines planted in 1967. Those are sensational stats reflective of a sensational wine. Saar-specific fruit and florals — green apples, bright florals, honey-drizzled lemon — zoom through the palate at high velocity. The petrol notes are already peeking through. This is the quintessential Kabinett of the estate. A must-have. 330cs made.
“From 50-year old vines in two different parcels in the Kleinschock plot, the 2018 Niedermenniger Sonnenberg Saar Riesling Kabinett Alte Reben opens with an intense yet bright, clear and mineral bouquet of ripe seed fruit and crushed stone aromas. Lush and piquant with racy freshness and slatey purity, this is a remarkably fine and stimulating Kabinett with terroir expression and good aging potential. This is a pretty complete and expressive wine with white stone fruit aromas on the aftertaste that’s mouthwatering, salty, fresh and piquant like lime fruit. This is quite opulent and tastes rather like a Spätlese. Tasted in June 2019. 2020-2040” – 90 points, Wine Advocate (SR).
