The Sturm family estate encompasses 10 hectares, most of which are located within the cru of Zegla in Cormons, Friuli near the Slovenia border. The composition of the terrain – primarily marl and sandstone from the Eocene epoch (34-56 million years old!) – is essentially clay-based rocks that disintegrate with the cycle of the seasons into smaller and smaller pebbles, finally becoming the mineral-rich soils which benefit Sturm’s vines. The Zegla cru adds much prestige to the estate: it’s not only the mineral-rich soil, known locally as Ponca (Opoka), but there is significantly more altitude, from 150 to 200 meters above sea level. The climate is blessed for wine growing: cool breezes from the Julian Alps help maintain the fresh characteristics and minerality of “continental” wines, while the proximity to the Adriatic and excellent expositions help to moderate the temperatures and bring an almost tropical ripeness to the fruit. All work in the vineyards is done by hand, and no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used.

100% Sauvignon Blanc from 35 year old organically farmed vines.  The grapes are de-stemmed and cold macerated for 24 hours. The must ferments in stainless steel temperature-controlled tanks (16 – 18°C) before aging on lees for 6 months and being bottled. There is a mouth watering, laser-like purity to the fruit and minerality of this white that transmits a clear picture of the varietal seen through Zegla terroir.  Really a classic display of this varietal.

“The 2018 Collio Sauvignon Blanc plays a sweet-and-sour act on the senses, rising up with a beguiling mix of soft washed cheeses, tart citrus and green apple; but with coaxing, it gains sweetness, as its fruit evolves to white strawberries in cream with hints of mint and sage. It’s soft and fleshy, balanced by zesty acids and salty minerals, with notes of apricot and a hint of lemon confit. The close is remarkably pretty, focused on ripe fruit, yet it remains fresh and vibrant throughout. Very nice.” – 92 points, Vinous Media (Galloni)
