Description

Always highly coveted and greatly revered by critics, this very rare case of Tement Sauvignon Blanc from the Grassnitzberg Vineyard was special ordered nearly 6 months ago, and has just arrived.  I am told by the importer this is the only case for California.

“In terms of size, sophisticated winemaking and the immense range of high-quality wines, I don’t see anybody else producing wine on this level in Austria…” -Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

The single-vineyard Grassnitzberg was the first vineyard owned by the Tement family and was planted in the early 1950’s. It’s a special site with coralline limestone soil with south-southeast facing slopes. After natural fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months on the lees in big neutral oak casks. Bottled unfiltered.

May be enjoyed young, but after three to five years, the Grassnitzberg terroir begins to shine. Alc. 13 %. 1.2 g/l residual sugar – dry. 6.7 g acidity.

“Quite reductive and lean on the pure and flinty nose, the spicy, leafy and coolish 2018 Ried Grassnitzberg Sauvignon Blanc displays greenish and reddish rather than yellow fruit aromas. Dense and tensioned on the palate, this is an explosive, firm and tannic Grassnitzberg with great power and terroir expression. This coolish, fresh and tensioned as well as concentrated yet by no means just lean or even small-bore Sauvignon is classified as “1 STK” premier cru, but it is as complex as a grand cru from a cooler site. Exciting. 13% alcohol. Tasted in October 2020.  Drink 2024 – 2040.”  – 94 points, Wine Advocate (SR)
