Best YET! While making all sorts of value comparison this last year…..especially for Cabernet/blends…..One of the very BEST, and this 2018 is the BEST YET! Is Andrea Franchetti’s amazing Le Cupole from his estate vineyards in the southeastern corner of Tuscany. Blue gray clay and alluvial soils are the magic here….not to say Andrea isn’t the maestro, because he and his team really do know what to do……first, the viticulture is meticulously coddled down to the individual vine, and then the selection process is almost “microscopic” sorting. The result are extremely meager productions of collectible singular Bordeaux varietal wines ranging from $100 to almost $300 a bottle. BUT what happens to the other grapes that didn’t make the arduous cut? LE CUPOLE!
As Franchetti’s vineyards gain more maturity his wines just keep getting better and better! And his prices for Le Cupole continue to be a “give away”. Stylistically Le Cupole offers a tightly knit and harmonious blend that allows for early gratification if you want to allow it to show its stuff, but be confident it will age gracefully in your cellar.
“This is a terrific wine that hits that proverbial sweet spot between excellence and value. The Tenuta di Trinoro 2018 Le Cupole is a blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 37% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot that sees a brief eight months in second and third-passage barrique followed by some additional resting time in cement. Production is an ample 70,000 bottles. This lovely vintage shows dark fruit intensity and richness with cherry, blackberry and plum. There is a touch of sweetness, but the mouthfeel is well constructed and layered with phenolic tightness and tight natural structure that will help it age 10 years or more. Le Cupole is one of the best values found in Tuscany. 2020 – 2035″ – 94 points, Wine Advocate – Moncia Larner (August 31, 2020)
