Renée and I first tried a bottle of the sumptuous and 2018 Tessier Saveria Vineyard, Santa Cruz Mountain with her beef bourguignon, which left us muttering to ourselves in disbelief the rest of the night. A purplish tinged ruby color wine, with an extremely complex nose of dark berry fruits, wood spices (cinnamon), earthy minerality, and intriguing floral complexity (violets and roses). But aside from being delicious, the amazing reward is the wine’s supple and stunningly silky-smooth, textured palate impressions. This wine likes to “cuddle”!
The Saveria Vineyard, owned by Frank Saveria and farmed by Prudy Fox, is positioned on a 2-9% slope in the very southern end of the Santa Cruz Mountain AVA. With an elevation at just over 600 feet, the 11 acre vineyard is situated on a combination of Baywood and Elder sandy loam with calcareous and colluvial soils. Fox sustainably farms and tends towards organic practices with no chemicals used in the soil. The vineyard was planted in 2001 with a selection of clones including 115, 667, 777, and 828 (La Tache). Kristie Tacey picked the grapes at a perfect 23 brix, and the grapes were fermented with 33% whole cluster inclusion. 16 months in French barrique, half new and half used. Bottle unfined and unfiltered. 13.5% alcohol. Only 145 cases were produced.
