Al Passo is a small circular forest with an interior passage (“al passo”) at the highest point of the Tolaini vineyard with a breathtaking view of the towers of Siena, the town of Montalcino and Montepulciano to the east.
Al Passo is a proprietary blend of Sangiovese 34%, Merlot 33%, Cabernet Sauvignon 33% sourced from gravel sized stones in clay and limestone on the Tolaini estate,
Maturation takes place on fine lees for 6 months in French barriques and oak fermenters, then racked to spend an additional 8 months in mostly used French barriques (20% new). Aged 12 months in bottle before release.
“This is a fantastic red with so much cherry, currant, ash, tobacco, earth and walnut aromas. It’s full and layered with firm tannins that provide form, texture and structure. Linear and long. Really excellent for the vintage. Give it two or three years to come together, but already a beauty. Try after 2024.” – 95 points, James Suckling.com
“A tightly packed red, evoking blackberry, black cherry, tar, tobacco and white pepper notes, aligned with a dense matrix of tannins. Well proportioned, this just needs time to relax and stretch out on the finish. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2024 through 2040.” – 92 points, Wine Spectator
