Torrontés does best when it is produced in the high elevation and sandy alluvial soils of the hot, dry and arid region of Salta in the Valle de Lafayate. The pergola trained vines producing Areyna are 42 years old and planted at 5,400 feet. This is a unblended, 100% varietal Torrontés fermented and aged briefly on its lees in stainless steel. The alcohol is a low 13.2%.
An extremely aromatic, but dry white wine displaying an intense citrus range and very floral profile of jasmine and gardenia. Torrontes needs to be grown with great vigilance. The grape has a very short window to pick for perfect ripeness. If not careful, or if there is a heat spike, the sugars can skyrocket resulting in a high alcohol, dull and flabby wine. The trick is to pick the Torrontes slightly earlier, when the sugars are still in check and the natural acidity is higher. Then the results are a lively, fresh and vibrant wine with great intensity, but lower alcohol, making it perfect for warm weather drinking. Try with curried shrimp, grilled spice rubbed rock cod, chicken with a papaya salsa, or a spicy snapper ceviche…..or simply by itself with a nibble of salty dry cheese.
