2019 Corison Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley – WS94, DE94, WA93

Really one of the very first modern day women winemakers of Napa Valley, armed with a master’s degree from UC Davis in enology, Cathy Corison began making wine in Napa Valley in the late 1970s when she was an intern at Freemark Abbey.  Then her first professional winemaking stints were at Yverdon (79-80) and then Chappellet up on Pritchard Hill for most of the 1980s.  In 1987 she broke out on her own by purchasing grapes from prime sites along the Oakville and Rutherford benchland’s well drained alluvial soils, and using a custom crush facility, and as she likes to say, “smoke and mirrors”.  During this period Cathy continued to “moonlight” at Staglin, York Creek, and Long Meadow Ranch.

In 1995, with the purchase of Kronos Vineyard, a property that had been a farm for over a century, there was finally an estate vineyard and a place to build a winery. In the spring of 1999 ground was broken to build a stately Victorian-style winery barn, designed by Cathy’s husband, William Martin.  Their second estate vineyard, Sunbasket, a stone’s throw from the winery, was purchased in 2015 after sourcing from it for over 25 years.

Corison Cabernet Sauvignons speak of place, and I consider them as timeless Napa Valley classics from another era.  Her Cabernet Sauvignon have always rated among my favorites of the region.  They are typically lower in alcohol than most and display a wonderful vibrant freshness.  Corison’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignons is certainly in this realm, as it possesses power and restraint, elegance and finesse.  We decanted and drank a bottle with Renee’s rack of lamb and while absolutely delicious and perfectly balanced, like most of Cathy’s Cabernets it is somewhat understated at this early stage, but with huge potential for blossoming complexity with patient cellaring.  Most importantly, I always stress Corison’s Cabernet Sauvignon continue to offer the consumer tremendous value when compared to its peers.

“A very fresh, floral-laced style, offering a bright beam of cassis and plum gelée laced flashes of violet, hibiscus and rose petal. Nicely grounded through the finish, with alder and warm earth hints filling in. Approachable, but this has more to show in time. Best from 2023 through 2036. 3,000 cases made.” – 94 points, Wine Spectator

“Alluring aromas of dark cassis, graphite, cedar and wild herbs. It has a striking depth with layered flavors and texture, and while restrained now it is incredibly well-built and in need of time in the cellar to fully shine. Reveals subtle hints of fresh black and blue berries, currants and dried herbs tinged with red florals. Finishes with polish, energy and poise. 2022-2040” – 94 points, Decanter

“Delicate herbal shadings accent the cassis notes on the nose of Corison’s 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s classic Corison, balanced and concentrated without being showy or weighty, silky in feel, with a long, lingering finish and two decades of ageability.” – 93 points, Wine Advocate
